History:
Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) is a government organization under the administrative control of the Ministry of Defence. The origin of BMD goes back to 1867 when the country’s meteorological activities started through the establishment of one observatory in Satkhira, a district in Southwestern Bangladesh. In 1947 the service had been renamed as Pakistan Meteorological Services and after the country’s independence in 1971, it became the Bangladesh Meteorological department.

To be a world class meteorological centre providing excellent services nationally and internationally.
Mission:
BMD is committed to providing effective meteorological and seismological services for protection of life, property and the environment, increased safety on land, at sea and in the air, enhanced quality of life and sustainable economic growth.
Responsibilities of BMD
Monitor and issue forecasts and warnings of all meteorological extreme events like tropical cyclone, severe thunderstorm/tornadoes, heavy rainfall, drought, cold and heat wave along with daily routine forecasts round the clock.
Issues short, medium and long-range forecasts for agricultural planning and operation of daily farmer’s activities.
Provide Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre with rainfall data, forecasts/warnings, radar and satellite image for the operation of flood forecasting and warning system.
Provides seismological information in and around the country along with Tsunami Advisories and warnings to the Government and public.
Cater all International and Domestic airlines, VVIP and VIP flights by providing take-off, landing and the route forecasts.
Supply and facilitate the application of climate data and information to the Government and private agencies for planning and performance of socio-economic development activities.
BMD is involved with WMO’s science based monitoring of the change/variability of climate and preparation of 21st century climate scenario development activities.
Archives all weather and climate data, maintenance of historical records of all meteorological and seismological extreme events in numeric and graphical forms.
BMD is associated with SMRC activities and also involve in the collaborating efforts of BIMSTEC establishment regionally.

Resume of Md. Momenul Islam,
Director (Current Charge), BMD Mr. Md. Momenul Islam has joined as a Director (Current Charge) of Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) on 21 November 2024. He has long been serving in different divisions of BMD. Mr. Islam was born in an aristocratic Muslim family on 31 October 1968 in Brahmanbaria District. He secured B.Sc (Hons) with Second Class First position in Statistics and M.Sc with First Class First position in Applied Statistics from Dhaka University. He has also received PGD in Seismology and Earthquake Engineering from IISEE, Japan. Prior to his appointment as Director (Current Charge), he had been Meteorologist April 1996 to July 2024 in different division of BMD. Also, he had been Deputy Director of the Administrative Division and additional charge in the Climate Division from 16 July 2024 to 20 November 2024. He joined BMD in 1996 after qualifying competitive examination conducted by Bangladesh Public Service Commission (BPSC). Mr. Islam has more than Twenty-eight years of experience in forecasting of Meteorology including cyclone forecasting, storm surge, monsoon systems, seasonal, medium range and long-range forecasting. Also, he has Research on Seismology, Oceanography and Project Planning development and management. He is highly skilled on Windows and Linux Operating Systems, Unix Program and Climate Predictability Tools. He served additional charge as a Deputy Project Director (DPD) of Bangladesh Weather and Climate Services Regional Project (BWCSRP Component-A), Bangladesh Meteorological Department funded by World Bank from 06 August 2016 to 11 April 2021. Mr. Islam has represented Bangladesh Government in many international forums. He had opportunities to take part in many seminars, symposiums, workshops and training program in abroad. He has visited different countries of the world including Japan, China, India, Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, Austria and Switzerland.

Dr. Md. Shadekul Alam is the Director (Current Charge) of Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD). He joined as Director (Current Charge) on 10 September 2024. Dr. Alam has long been serving in different sections of BMD. Dr. Alam was born in an aristocratic Muslim family on 22 November 1965 in the district of Rajbari. He secured B.Sc (Hons) in Physics and M.Sc in Physics from Jahangirnagar University, and he has also received PhD on Atmospheric Physics from Jahangirnagar University. Prior to his appointment as Director (Current Charge), he had been Deputy Director of the Meteorological Training Institute of BMD from 08 January 2024 to 19 August 2024 and he joined BMD in 1992 after qualifying competitive examination conducted by Bangladesh Public Service Commission (BPSC). Dr. Alam is mainly interested in the field of Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP) system. He has also extensive research experiences in the different fields of Meteorology including cyclone forecasting, thunderstorm, storm surge, monsoon systems, seasonal, medium range and longrange forecasting and he is highly skilled on FORTRAN, Python, C, Linux etc. Dr. Alam has represented Bangladesh Government in many international forums. He had opportunities to take part in many seminars, symposiums, workshops and training programs in and abroad. He has visited different countries of the world including Malaysia, South Korea, China, Japan, Nepal, France, Norway, Thailand, India and Singapore.
